Why we work here?
Equines are widely used in the farming industry within China as well as in the sports and leisure sector. Their roles are changing over time and at a rapid rate, and because of that, knowledge of how to care for these equines in each context is not inherent. Instead, equine-specific care and management principles are needed to be embedded into these industries carefully but without delay in order to best protect the animals involved.
What we are doing?
With the generous support of The Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, we have been working in China since 2016 to establish a project to protect and promote equine welfare in the country.
We are developing partnerships with universities across China to help improve the equine-related knowledge and skills of veterinary students and are working with a wide range of stakeholders to enhance the status of these vets once qualified.
Our expertise in key welfare topics including equine health, transport and responsible use is being shared with those that work within equine industries in order to raise awareness and skill levels amongst those that have an influence on the welfare of animals in the country.
Meet veterinary students
Some of the students at the South China Agricultural University (SCAU) have created their own horse club to share their passion for horses and take care of the horses that are based at the campus. The Redbud Horseman Club is now well established and aids those veterinary students involved to better understand how to work with horses in their future careers.
