Why we work here?

Millions of Senegalese people, like many across the continent rely on horsepower to support their livelihoods. For many working with their horse or donkey is an essential part of daily life. Working equids are often poorly handled, malnourished with wounds and poor hoof conditions.

What we are doing?

We have worked in Senegal since 2009 building on farriery and harness training initially to now working with whole communities, veterinary schools, the government and FAO. In Rufisque, a town just outside Dakar, we work directly with horse owners to improve the living conditions, nutrition and hoof condition of the equids.

Meet a team member

Abdoulaye was born in Kaolack but grew up in Rufisque where World Horse Welfare’s main project communities are. Rufisque is a city in the Dakar region that has a long tradition of equine transport.

Horses have, since the colonial period, been the main form of goods and public transport For Rufisque, equines are crucial. Abdoulaye’s local knowledge and strong relationships with the owners is a huge benefit to the project. Abdoulaye visited our project with Cart Horse Protection Association in South Africa in 2019 to learn about a different project and share ideas with the team.
