We are proud to be part of the International Coalition for Working Equids alongside Brooke, SPANA and The Donkey Sanctuary.
The International Coalition for Working Equids (ICWE) coalition was formed to collaborate with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in providing technical support to the OIE and to assist in implementing the new OIE Code Chapter 7.12. on the Welfare of Working Equids to all 182 OIE member states. ICWE is working with the OIE to provide training to support national government initiatives to help make these welfare standards a reality around the world.
In 2018, ICWE facilitated a working equid welfare awareness day within the African region’s OIE Animal Welfare Focal Point workshop, which was held in Lesotho. During the workshop, training was provided to senior animal welfare representatives from 24 countries across Africa. The next working equid welfare awareness day is due to be held in September 2019 in Brazil.
ICWE also works together to raise awareness on the valuable role of working animals in livelihood systems and has produced a brochure on how working equids contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
