EU guides on responsible ownership
Encouraging and supporting responsible ownership is the cornerstone of horse welfare.
Encouraging and supporting responsible ownership is the cornerstone of horse welfare.
As a member of the Voluntary Initiative on the welfare of Equidae under the EU Platform on Animal Welfare, we supported the development of the EU Guides and Factsheets on responsible ownership and care of horses, donkeys and their hybrids. Translated into multiple EU languages, the Guides cover good animal welfare practice for the care, training and use of equids and are intended for anyone who owns, keeps or is involved with these animals in some capacity.
The Guides provide comprehensive advice on minimum welfare requirements for kept equines, including accommodation (including indoor and outdoor housing), access to shelter and pasture, water and nutrition needs, health risks (including biosecurity hazards), and handling and training. The aim is to encourage higher welfare standards through advice and guidance.
