Imagine being crammed into a lorry. You’re frightened and exhausted. The heat is stifling. There’s little food or water, and no way of knowing where you’re going.
This is the harsh reality for too many horses.
Our commitment to end unnecessarily long journeys by 2027
Nearly 100 years ago, Ada Cole founded our charity to be a voice for horses suffering needlessly on their way to slaughter. Her mission still lives on in our determination, and right now we have a once-in-a-generation chance to end the long-distance transport of horses across Europe for slaughter by 2027.
Why long-distance transport to slaughter must end
Exhaustion
Long hours in cramped lorries bracing and balancing in a moving lorry leaves horses physically drained – especially those already unwell.
Rough or inappropriate handling
Many horses are managed by untrained handlers, causing fear and injury.
Unfit horses being transported
Despite regulations, horses that are ill, injured, overweight, or otherwise unfit to travel are still being loaded onto lorries, putting them at serious risk throughout the journey.
Extreme heat
As European summers become increasingly long and hot, horses confined in metal transporters face extreme heat stress and dehydration — conditions that can quickly become life-threatening.
Lack of reliable data
Alarmingly, discrepancies in official transport and slaughter figures suggest that many horses are still falling through the cracks. Without accurate records, we cannot be confident that all horses are being monitored or protected.
